About the event
Setting moveable type was one of the most revolutionary innovations of all time, making the book-making process and the dissemination of knowledge much more accessible.
In this in-person workshop, students will work with wood or lead type to create their own unique messages.
Students should come with a quote, lyric, line of a poem, or a sentence (no more than 7 words) in mind to work with.
We'll browse our extensive selection of types and fonts, choose from some of our larger typefaces to work with, and use some simple practices to ensure your success in crafting your message.
No experience is necessary.
Bonus: you'll get much better at reading backwards (and upside-down)!

The class will be taught by SPPC member Pixie Carlson. Pixie is a queer femme artist who started learning letterpress and relief printing weeks before the pandemic shut everything down in 2020. She became enchanted with letterpress as a way to combine her passions for the written word and visual art. Her work has been featured in shows at the Liberty Gallery and Terrain in downtown Spokane and Emerge in Coeur d’Alene. Pixie is the printer and co-proprietor of R&P Paperie. You can find her work on Instagram at @pixiereadsbooks and @rp_paperie.
