About the event
Students will learn two Japanese book arts techniques. First is Suminagashi, the eastern form of paper marbling. Learn how to float sumi ink and transfer to sheets of Washi. Students will then use the sheets that they marbled to cover the Fukuro-toji (known as Japanese stab binding in the west) that students will learn to construct as well.
All materials included. Previous marbling and binding experience is welcome by not necessary. Age minimum 16.
This class is taught by Mel Hewitt.
Mel Hewitt is a book artist working her way towards becoming proficient in all aspects of the book arts. Her skills currently lie in traditional and contemporary binding structures and finishing techniques, paper marbling, paste papers, and incorporating letter press, screen printing, and relief printing into her pieces.
